Yesterday our blushes were saved with Tony Carroll's 4yo filly Magna, who took it on about a furlong out and despite wandering to the left in the last 100 yards or so, was strong enough to thwart the challenge of the favourite. It will be interesting to see what penalty the handicapper sees fit for this triumph.

Today the action moves over to Wolverhampton for an afternoon/evening 9 race card. The course is currently unraceable due to the snow and plunging temperatures, but they are hopeful this will change by mid-afternoon.

Looking at the card, there is nothing I would go so far as to back, although Colors of Freedom in the last is interesting and worth a look. 

I very rarely get too excited by a horse which I class as a "professional placer", and Joe Ponting's 6yo mare has been beaten into 2nd on her last 2 outings. She could have been thought of as unlucky on Friday last maybe, but it will be interesting to see how she responds.

Yesterday's bunch were pretty average to be honest, and that's being kind.  Today only the all-weather meet at Southwell survives and here are three who may be worth a look. Southwell 1.30 Havana Sky EW - Ed Dunlop's 5yo gelding has been running well of late at Lingfield and Wolverhampton and is perfectly capable of finding the frame here. The excellent Jonny Peate takes the ride for the first time - unplaced 2.00 Magna - Finally got off the mark at Kempton a couple of weeks back and if coping with a 4lb rise, she may be able to follow up - won 11/4 3.00 Hiya Maite - Beaten favourite when coming 2nd here a week ago. It would have been nice to have backed the three chosen horses at Lingfield yesterday as a treble, or even a Patent. OK I did have a single bet on each and made a few quid, but a 262.5/1 treble would have been rather pleasant to say the least.   Today's focus is on my favourite AW course, Chelmsford City, where there is a 7 race card to peruse.  The best race of the day is the 7f handicap at 3.42 where 12 runners go to post. Trainer Stuart Williams is in top form currently and he has three entered for this event.  His 10yo gelding REVOLUTIONISE may now be a joining the veteran stage, but he only goes up a very manageable 4lb for winning here 9 days ago and is certainly capable of winning again. Also the booking of young Harry Vigors to ride is a definite positive (mark my words, he is a star of the future) . Diamondonthehill and Commander of Life will not be far away. A winner and a couple of placed horses yesterday was ok, but not greatly exciting. Let's see what happens at Lingfield Park and Southwell today. Lingfield Park 1.10 ROSIEISME DARLING - All logic suggests to me that either Enter Sandman or Filly Foden should be winning this, but in the search for a bit of value and knowing what a shrewd trainer Hayley Burton is in this kind of event, I think her filly has a very good chance. Luke Morris in the saddle is a big plus as well. 3.30 SILKY WILKIE - Karl Burke sends his 7yo here on a hefty journey from his stable in North Yorkshire, after impressively winning at Newcastle a couple of weeks back. He has Ziggy's Condor to contend with, but should prevail. Southwell 5.30 MRS MEADER (ew) - A total outsider and no-hoper some might say, but trainers Julia and Shelley Birkett have an exemplary record at Southwell and stranger things have happened.
