Yesterday's selections were somewhat underwhelming until The Tunguska Event saved my blushes, taking the 3yo, 6 furlong handicap at Newcastle, at 5/1.

Yesterday I posted my liking for Ross Burdon's SEVENTY in the last at Lingfield, and then watched as the 4yo colt won impressively, going away from the rest at 9/2. I'm not saying there will be posts here every day, but keep an eye out just in case.

On to today and there is a plethora of all-weather action with Southwell and Dundalk this afternoon, followed by Kempton Park tonight. Here are quite a few to get your head around.....

Southwell

2.44 MERCURIUS POWER (ew) - Has been running well of late, although it is a good while since he crossed the line in first. Each way claims.

4.44 MARRA DONNA - Ran well at Newcastle 5 days ago, beaten into 3rd in the dying strides. Remains on the same mark and should be winning today.

Dundalk

2.38 UMALA (ew) - Probably needed the run when 5th over 10+ furlongs, a fortnight ago. Now tackles 2 miles and could be thereabouts. Trainer Robson Aguiar's stable currently in good form.

4.38 WITHOUT LOVE - Cian Hughes' 4yo gelding won a very messy race here 12 days ago and is taken to follow up.

Kempton Park

5.05 HOVE RANGER - Ran a very promising 2nd last time at Lingfield, staying on well at the end. On the same mark today and can go one better this time.

6.40 SUMMER HEAT - 2nd outing for James Owen after being sold from Saeed Bin Suroor's stable for 55,000 gns. Showed promise last time coming 2nd over 7 furlongs; now back to a mile, it will not be long before she is winning.

7.10 TIGER CRUSADE (ew) - Today's somewhat speculative choice did win at Lingfield last time out, 3 weeks ago. Has a decent record at Kempton and goes up 2lbs for that effort. He is far from being a forlorn hope.

8.10 TOKEN GESTURE - Won an 8-runner handicap here 3+ weeks ago and probably looked at his best. He's a bit of a monkey, however, and if he's not in the mood, then it's probably not worth the effort.

Yesterday's bunch were pretty average to be honest, and that's being kind.  Today only the all-weather meet at Southwell survives and here are three who may be worth a look. Southwell 1.30 Havana Sky EW - Ed Dunlop's 5yo gelding has been running well of late at Lingfield and Wolverhampton and is perfectly capable of finding the frame here. The excellent Jonny Peate takes the ride for the first time - unplaced 2.00 Magna - Finally got off the mark at Kempton a couple of weeks back and if coping with a 4lb rise, she may be able to follow up - won 11/4 3.00 Hiya Maite - Beaten favourite when coming 2nd here a week ago. On the same mark and can go one better this time - unplaced

Sunday 11th January 2026

It would have been nice to have backed the three chosen horses at Lingfield yesterday as a treble, or even a Patent. OK I did have a single bet on each and made a few quid, but a 262.5/1 treble would have been rather pleasant to say the least.   Today's focus is on my favourite AW course, Chelmsford City, where there is a 7 race card to peruse.  The best race of the day is the 7f handicap at 3.42 where 12 runners go to post. Trainer Stuart Williams is in top form currently and he has three entered for this event.  His 10yo gelding REVOLUTIONISE may now be a joining the veteran stage, but he only goes up a very manageable 4lb for winning here 9 days ago and is certainly capable of winning again. Also the booking of young Harry Vigors to ride is a definite positive (mark my words, he is a star of the future) . Diamondonthehill and Commander of Life will not be far away. The next best race on the card is the 0-75 handicap race at 2.12 where the Stuart Williams/Harry Vigors ...

Saturday 17th January 2026

Firstly, I apologise for the lack of a column over the last 2 days; this was due to a family illness. Thankfully, all is improving now. Today there is an afternoon card at Lingfield, followed by racing under floodlights at Southwell. I have a couple I like at Lingfield, although nothing really stands out to me at Southwell. Lingfield Park 12.40 Justcallmepete - going for a 4-timer and up 3lbs for his last win, but even though the quality of opposition is higher, he is surely up to reaching the frame? 2.20 Haziym - competes here with stable-mate Gogo Yubari, my recent successful selection; his performance, however, pretty much hinges on his mood.
